4 Ways to Give Your Child the Motivation to Floss

If your child is lacking the motivation to floss, our team at Smiles Dental is happy to help you! Flossing is very important, which is why we recommend that you do the following things to help your child love taking care of their smile:

Show them the way
Make flossing a family activity and be an example for your child. If you floss once a day, your child will know that they need to floss once a day as well. Also, teach them how to floss by demonstration. First floss your own smile and show your child every step. Then use a new piece of floss and clean between a few of your child’s teeth. Let them look in the mirror as you do so. Finally, let them floss their own smile and guide them along the way. Please make sure they are gentle as they floss near the gums.

Praise good behavior
Each time your child flosses, make sure they know that you are proud of them. Praise them for a job well done. You can also encourage your child by coming up with a rewarding system. If your child flosses every day for a week, you can give them their favorite treat or toy. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you praise your child each time they floss.

Buy kid-friendly flossing products
Children love to use oral hygiene products that have their favorite cartoon characters or superheroes on them, so try to purchase a flossing product they are excited about. This will help them want to floss.

Tell them about the Tooth Fairy
The Tooth Fairy is a very motivational character. She can encourage children to take care of their smiles more often than the parents can. All you need to do is tell your child that the Tooth Fairy will reward them even more if they give her a tooth that is healthy and in good condition.

If you are interested, Dr. Dr. Clint Guttman and Dr. Marcus Peterson can also meet with your child and share the importance of flossing. Our team can also show them the “Before” pictures of our patients’ smiles to motivate your child to floss. So, if this is something you would like to do, please feel free to call 541.887.3305 and schedule an appointment. We are happy to help you!
